The inverted scrub method
A user on Reddit posted a fix for erratic scrolling that sounded completely made up. The idea is to clear out dust trapped inside the wheel without opening the plastic shell.
Here is what you do:
- Turn your mouse upside-down on your desk or mousepad.
- Press down firmly on the scroll wheel so the middle-click button stays engaged.
- Drag the inverted mouse back and forth across the pad as fast as you can for about fifteen seconds.
You are using the friction of the pad to spin the wheel at high speeds in reverse while applying pressure. The rapid rotation acts like a mini centrifuge, dislodging the small bits of hair, skin cells, and desk lint that throw off the internal sensor.
To be scientific about it, visit scroll-o-meter.club to track the distance. Around 0.100 miles of mouse wheel scrolling, my mouse felt like new again.
The results
As the original user who discovered this noted, the problem tends to re-appear.
This is a temporary patch, not a permanent repair. You are dislodging the debris inside the housing, not removing it from the building. The dust is still inside the casing, and eventually, it drifts back into the encoder.
Depending on how dusty your room is, the problem may return in a few days or a few months again.
When it happens again, you have two choices: give it another fifteen-second scrub on the desk, or take the mouse apart and clear the sensor directly with compressed air or isopropyl alcohol.
